Make user friendly mobile blogs with Tumblr

Blogs are a lot of work to create. They were built to handle long text posts with images and formatting. Bu what happens when you want a simple solution to quickly add a note or two to share to friends or family? That’s where the scrapbooks of the blogging world come into play. Tumblr’s tumblelogs are great for creating free small blogs that make sharing information easy.

Users can choose to use your choice of a subdomain, or hook up your own .com to redirect to your account. The Tumblr system works almost exactly like Wordpress, but a heck of a lot simpler by taking out the guesswork about how to add images, video and other pieces of content. There are themes to choose from and customize complete with a clean uncluttered interface.

Tumblr has six main options for posting a blog entry:

  • Regular post - Complete with text formating, and the ability to add images and HTML code.
  • Photo - Uploading a JPEG, GIF, PNG, or BMP image, or using a URL to import an image.
  • Quote - Enter the quote with the same formatting as the Regular post, and the Source of the quote. This indents and formats the Quote with parenthesis.
  • Link - Create a quick link.
  • Conversation - Have a conversation with yourself about something. Formatting makes each line background have a different color.
  • Video - Embed a video from YouTube, Google Video, or any other video suite, and add in a caption.

This is a blog option I would recommend to anyone (including Grandparents) that may not be comfortable with traditional blog platform applications including Wordpress and MovableType, that want to share information with everyone. Tumblr just makes it so easy.

Now let’s bring the mobile world into this for the pro users. Tumblr has the ability to post entries through a unique email address you can store on your mobile device. Send text or images to this address, and Tumblr will post them live. Great for dropping a quick line or two while on the road to keep everyone up to date.
